Sustainability, Business, and the Commons- CRES Day 22nd April 2023

Earth DayOur next CRES in-person day (open to all) is on Saturday 22nd April 2023 (Earth Day) at Ripon College Cuddesdon (RCC) near Oxford. We have two great speakers: Simon Graham of De Courcy Alexander Ltd., and John Reader, our very own CRES Senior Tutor. Their themes are very much related to the Earth Day 2023 theme of “Invest in Our Planet”. In the morning Simon will look at some of the major issues in sustainable business. Then in the afternoon, John will consider “The Commons”, perhaps best known in environmental thinking for, “The Tragedy of the Commons”. We are currently aiming at being a group of about 25-35. So book early with Lynda to ensure your place (details below).

14.00-15.15 John Reader will speak on “The Commons; Enclosures or Thresholds?”

15.45-16.00 Tea and depart.

Simon GrahamSimon Graham is Head Innovation at De Courcy Alexander. He has spent the last 15 years in sustainable business, launching one of the first net zero programmes, in 2006, and the first integrated zero carbon and zero waste operations in the UK. Recipient of more than 20 national and international awards, he was the subject of case studies published in New Scientist and the Observer. He was a visiting fellow at the University of Nottingham, is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and Royal Society of Arts, and is Co-founder and Chief Knowledge Officer of the Zero Carbon Academy.

John ReaderJohn Reader has degrees from Oxford (MA), Manchester (MPhil), and a Ph.D. from the University of Wales, Bangor. He is a Senior Research Fellow of the William Temple Foundation. He has published 6 solo books and co-edited or with chapters in a further 16. Recent publications include “A Philosophy of Christian Materialism” (co-written with Baker and James)  “Theology and New Materialism” (Palgrave Radical Theologies series) and “Postdigital Theologies: Technology, Belief and Practice” (co-edited with Savin-Baden). John is a CRES Senior Tutor.

 

Booking For CRES students, tutors, and steering group, the day is included in student fees. The fee for those not associated with the CRES course will be £25. But EVERYONE wanting to come MUST book with the CRES Administrator, Lynda McKeown, by 12th April at the latest.
