The Garden and the Sea- CRES Day 12th November 2022

The Garden and the Sea- CRES Day 12th November 2022

Our next CRES in-person day is on Saturday 12th November 2022 (10.00am to 4.00pm) at Ripon College Cuddesdon (RCC). We have two amazing speakers: Revd. John White of Hazelnut Farm and Dr Rebecca Watson, an Old Testament theologian who works for the Eastern Region Ministry Course. Their themes have a nice contrast. In the morning we will look at a very land-based project in Bristol and in the afternoon consider the oceans. We are currently aiming at being a group of about 40 (pandemic provided). We will restrict booking to CRES students, tutors, and steering group until 21st October, when we will open up to all comers!

Revd. John White will speak on “Hazelnut Community Farm”

John is originally from the US and is now a Vicar in the CofE. He is the founder of Hazelnut Community Farm which is a worshipping community that has social innovation, economic inclusion, political and spiritual transformation at its heart all looking at how to connect with creation and address the reality of the climate emergency. Hazelnut is also a growing network around the UK which is encouraging and resourcing churches to think about their connection with and care for creation.  They offer support, ideas, retreats, courses, training, and a conference. All are designed to help churches and communities reengage with the creator and creation in an age of climate emergency.

Dr. Rebecca Watson will speak on “Ecology, the Sea and the Bible”

Rebecca has been working in theological education and research for the last 20 years and is currently on the staff of the Eastern Region Ministry Course in Cambridge, which trains students for lay and ordained ministry in the Church of England. She previously spent three years as a research associate at the Faraday Institute where she worked with an oceanographer, Meric Srokosz, on a project on the sea in the Bible and oceanography, which has so far resulted in a book (Blue Planet, Blue God: The Bible and The Sea) and several chapters and articles.

Booking For CRES students, tutors, and steering group, the day is included in student fees. After 21st October booking will be open to all. The fee for those not associated with the CRES course will be £25. But EVERYONE wanting to come MUST book with the CRES Administrator, Lynda McKeown, by 4th November at the latest. Email cres@jri.org.uk Further details will be sent out to those who have booked in early November.
